The House has given final approval to emergency legislation that would help the state fight the spread of chronic wasting disease in deer. The bill requires mandatory registration of captive deer and elk herds. It also requires that slaughtered animals or those that die of other causes be tested for the disease.

This week chronic wasting disease was found in a wild deer in central New York state, prompting fears that the disease could spread to Vermont.
