Three environmental groups, including one in Vermont, are appealing plans to log in a protected area of the White Mountain National Forest.
The Center for Biological Diversity and the Vermont and New Hampshire chapters of the Sierra Club are opposing the U.S. Forest Service’s plans to rebuild roads and cut trees in protected roadless area between the Sandwich Range Wilderness and the Kancamagus National Scenic Byway.
The Bush administration drew criticism from conservationists for allowing logging and mining in protected roadless areas. President Obama says he supports the rule limiting use of roadless areas so the groups are calling on him and Congress to insure it is fully implemented.
