The Minnesota natural resources department has cited a North Dakota company for transporting water pumps from Vermont that were encrusted with thousands of zebra mussels.

The tractor trailer truck was hauling the pumps from Vermont when it pulled into a weigh station on Interstate 94 in Minnesota.

Officials spotted between 5,000 to 10,000 mussels. The equipment was cleaned and returned to the company.

The company SolarBee Incorporated says the pumps were being hauled to its main facility in North Dakota for decontamination. The company says mussels were harmless.

But Minnesota officials says it doesn’t take many zebra mussels to start a large-scale infestation.

Zebra mussels are an invasive species that can clog pump intakes.
