(Host) President-elect Barack Obama’s choice for attorney general has won praise from the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Senator Patrick Leahy says Attorney General-designate Eric Holder has a long reputation for fairness.

(Leahy) "He is an outstanding nominee for this challenging position. He has had the support of senators from both sides of the aisle. He did when President Ronald Reagan nominated him to be a judge. He did when he was nominated to be US attorney. He did when he was nominated to be deputy attorney general always winning confirmation easily."

(Host) Leahy has been critical of the attorneys general and the Justice Department under President Bush.

He says he expects that Holder’s biggest challenge will be setting a new course for the department.

(Leahy) "He will have a mandate to rebuild morale and public confidence in the Justice Department. That has to be his top priority. And Eric Holder’s extensive experience and knowledge of the department will serve him well as he restores confidence to a great Justice Department."

(Host) Leahy says he intends to schedule Holder’s confirmation hearing before the Judiciary Committee as soon as possible.
