It’s a good year for Vermont’s black bears.

Experts say bears in the woods this summer are enjoying a bounty of berries, apples, vegetation and nuts.

Plentiful food should keep bears from looking for food this season in peoples’ garbage cans.

State wildlife biologist Forrest Hammond estimates there are between 4,600 and 5,000 bears in Vermont.

The plentiful food should allow bears to stay deeper in the woods.

And that could mean that hunters will have a harder time finding bear this year. The bear season opened September 1.
