A former Burlington eye doctor acquitted in 2005 of federal fraud charges for allegedly performing unneeded surgeries has been cleared in a lawsuit.

A jury found 72-year-old Dr. David Chase applied a reasonable standard of care and the patient, Margaret McGowan of Essex Junction, was not harmed by his actions.

McGowan claimed Chase performed unnecessary cataract surgery on her in 2003. She was seeking $300,000 in compensatory damages and another $300,000 to $450,000 in punitive damages.

After deliberating for nearly two hours on Thursday night, the jury cleared Chase of the allegations.
