The head of FairPoint Communications has gone on the air to apologize for problems affecting customer e-mail accounts in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.

During the switchover from Verizon’s systems this month, thousands of customers reported problems. Some said information in their e-mail system was lost.

FairPoint CEO Eugene Johnson says in a TV ad and on the company Web site that most of the complex transition went well, but acknowledged the company had not completely met customer expectations and had inconvenienced some.

He apologized and said the company would not let customers down as it moves forward.
