The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department wants to increase the number of permits it issues for the annual moose hunt. The department is proposing to issue 440 permits this fall, up from the 365 that were handed out last year.

The department also says it wants to lengthen the four-day hunt to six days. Department officials say the moose population has expanded to a point where it needs to be controlled more vigorously.

Last year 221 moose were taken during the hunt.
