A judge has ruled that independent gubernatorial candidate Anthony Pollina didn’t violate Vermont’s campaign finance law by accepting contributions larger than $1,000 from several donors.
Judge William Sessions yesterday issued a permanent injunction blocking the state from taking enforcement action against Pollina.
Attorney General William Sorrell and Secretary of State Deborah Markowitz threatened to take action after Pollina dropped his Progressive Party affiliation to run as an independent.
They said that meant he wouldn’t face a primary, and so was limited to $1,000 per person in campaign contributions, and that some donors had exceeded that.
Sessions ruled that the fact that Pollina was in the primary race for a time made him eligible for a $2,000 cap.
