Fines levied against private prison company

The state of Kentucky wants to levy a $10,000 fine against the company that runs the prison where Vermont inmates rioted earlier this year.

Kentucky Corrections Commissioner John Rees says Corrections Corporation of American didn’t adequately organize, equip, train and maintain the 20 members of an emergency response team. A state report says only seven response team members were available the evening of the September 14 riot. The report says the riot was created by a lack of communication up and down the chain of command. The riot ended without serious injury or escapes.

A spokeswoman for Corrections Corporation of American says the company will pay the fine.
