Authorities were on the scene of a fire in a building adjacent to City Hall and the historic Barre Opera House last night.

Barre City Fire Chief Peter John says the fire in the four-story former Lash Furniture building apparently broke out in a first-floor restaurant, but the cause is unknown.

No injuries have been reported.

Firefighters were on the scene, using ladders to reach fourth-floor windows and shining lights into them. Shattered glass littered the pavement in front of the building, and fire crews from Barre City, Barre Town, Montpelier, Williamstown and elsewhere were assisting.

No fire or smoke was visible from outside the building.
