Fletcher Allen to keep midwives

Vermont‘s largest hospital has dropped plans to cut the number of nurse-midwives working in its birthing center.

Fletcher Allen Health Care announced the decision after the union representing nurse midwives — as well as former and current patients — criticized proposed cuts in the staff.

The cuts would have meant that the hospital could no longer guarantee that it would have nurse midwives available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

But hospital spokesman Mike Noble says Fletcher Allen has decided to keep nurse-midwife staffing at current levels at least for the next two years.
