Foodbank Hit Hard In Federal Cuts

Senator Bernie Sanders says cuts in a federal emergency hunger program have resulted in a 50% reduction in the food it supplies the Vermont Foodbank.

Sanders appeared Tuesday with representatives from the Vermont Foodbank and Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf to highlight the issue. He called the situation "unconscionable."

The Emergency Food Assistance Program provides food at no cost to low-income Americans in need of short-term hunger relief. The food is distributed through organizations like the Vermont Foodbank.

The reduction in the Foodbank’s allotment from the program amounts to a drop of more than a million pounds of food.

And Sanders warns more federal cuts are likely coming that could affect other safety-net programs, like food stamps.
