For father who fatally shot son, grief and charge

A Vermont man who accidentally shot his son to death as they were turkey hunting last month has more than his grief to contend with these days. He also has to worry about going to jail for it.

Kevin Kadamus, of Lyndon, is charged with manslaughter in the May 1 death of 17-year-old Jacob Kadamus in Wheelock.

Experts say it’s one of the most heart-wrenching decisions prosecutors must make – whether to bring criminal charges against a grieving, guilt-ridden family member with killing another family member in a hunting accident.

Some prosecutors take a harder line than others, cases across the country have shown.

Kadamus, a 45-year-old father of three, is to be arraigned on the charge July 6 in St. Johnsbury.
