Former alter boy seeks lien on church land

A former altar boy awarded $3.6 million in a priest sex case wants a lien put on land owned by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Burlington.

Lawyers for 43-year-old David Navari, of Takoma Park, Md., have filed a motion in Chittenden Superior Court seeking the lien on 10 acres of undeveloped land located south of the church’s headquarters in Burlington.

One of his lawyers, Jerome O’Neill, says it’s standard procedure after winning a judgment to seek security.

A jury awarded the money to Navari on Wednesday after a trial on his claim that the Diocese failed to protect him from the Rev. Edward Paquette, whom he says molested him in 1977.
