Former Essex County Sheriff investigated

The state is investigating a former Essex County sheriff who showered his employees with nearly $25,000 in Christmas bonuses as he left office at the turn of the year.

Former Sheriff Amos Colby is defending the payments – some $4,000 of which went to his own family members. He says the money was well deserved by employees who put in many hours of unpaid overtime.

The state auditor’s office and attorney general’s office both are investigating to determine if there was any wrongdoing.
Colby says Essex County residents were grateful for the service and will not be upset.
