The man who spent five years as the top federal law enforcement agent in Vermont could become the next United States attorney general.

White House officials say George Terwilliger III is being mentioned as one of five possible successors to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

Terwilliger was Vermont’s United States Attorney from 1986-1991.

But members of Vermont’s legal community are reluctant to discuss his time in the state.

Middlebury Attorney Peter Langrock says Terwilliger was a competent attorney.

Terwilliger left Vermont in 1991. In February 1992, President George H.W. Bush nominated him for deputy attorney general.

He is now a partner at a Washington law firm.
