Leaders in four Sullivan County, New Hampshire communities are calling for all of the towns to withhold tax payments to the county until several budget accountability steps are taken.

City councilors and select board members in Claremont, Grantham, Newport and Sunapee say that according to a recent audit, the deficit for the past several years is near four million dollars. They say unless corrective action is taken soon, the county budget will continue to spiral out of control.

They are requesting that the county put into position an administrator who will have authority and oversight over day-to-day and long-range county budget activities; create a plan to address continuing financial troubles at the Sullivan County Nursing Home; and implement a plan to change how the county budget is created and adopted.
