Franklin County towns compare police services

Residents of three Franklin County towns are being wooed both by state police and the sheriff’s department as they decide what kind of police protection they want. There have been discussions among Enosburg, Richford and Montgomery about hiring the county sheriff’s office to provide 24-hour coverage.

But the commander of the St. Albans barracks of the state police says that would mean state police would no longer be their primary law enforcement agency. And he says that also means other towns would get attention first.

The St. Albans barracks now has 21 troopers, which the commander says will make coverage in the three towns better.

The communities may vote on Town Meeting Day about the police coverage.
