(Host) The French ambassador to the United States traveled to Vermont today to help mark the 400th anniversary of Samuel de Champlain’s exploration of the region.

Ambassador Pierre Vimont helped dedicate an exhibition at the Shelburne museum of rare wampum belts made in the 17th century by Abenaki and Huron people.

The belts are on loan this summer from the Chartres Cathedral in France.

Vimont says the Champlain Quadricentennial is an opportunity to celebrate the long history between France and Vermont.

(Vimont) "Today once again, Champlain reunites us to make possible yet another amicable encounter between American and French people in remembrance for their common past."

(Host) Vimont says the present-day Champlain region remains an important cultural and commercial partner with France.
