Congressman Peter Welch is seen as in an unusually strong position for a member of Congress 18 months into his first term.

Welch has been able to take advantage of two plumb committee assignments to tackle major issues, has $825,000 in his campaign war chest and has no announced opponent in this fall’s election.

It’s usually easiest to defeat an incumbent member of Congress when he or she is finishing a first term.

But Middlebury College political science professor Eric Davis says Welch looks quite strong this year.
