The company that owns the South Burlington’s GE Healthhcare facility is facing layoffs because of the weak economy.

GE Healthcare CEO John Dineen sent an e-mail to company employees on Wednesday that says the company is poised to "initiate restructuring," possibly as soon as this month.

The South Burlington facility was founded as the medical software producer IDX Systems. As of July it employed about 800 people.

Globally, GE Healthcare employs about 47,000 people. The company also has facilities in Illinois, New Jersey, Utah and Wisconsin.

Company spokesman Brian McKaig wouldn’t disclose the number of layoffs that could be coming.
