Republican presidential front-runners Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney spent weekend campaign trips to New Hampshire sparring over health care, spending and other aspects of their records.

Giuliani yesterday described Romney’s health insurance program for Massachusetts as a costly mistake, comparing it to Democratic rival Hillary Rodham Clinton’s failed health care plan in the mid-1990s.

Romney and Giuliani both claimed the mantle of fiscal restraint while accusing the other of wasteful spending.

Romney opened the attack Saturday with a press release detailing Giuliani’s fiscal record as New York mayor and describing him as big spender who left the city with a $3 billion budget gap.

Guiliani said Romney is the one who had a poor fiscal record. He said the former Massachusetts governor increased spending while in office.
