(Host) Goddard College in Plainfield has a new president. Dr. Mark Schulman currently heads Antioch University Southern California.

VPR’s Steve Zind reports.

(Zind) Schulman has a background in journalism and communications and was formerly chair of the communications department at the New School for Social Research in New York City.

His appointment comes at a time when Goddard is undergoing significant changes. This summer, trustees of the private, non-profit institution voted to discontinue the college’s residency programs. They cited difficulties in meeting the financial requirements of accreditation. Trustees say they’ll focus on non-residency programs, where a majority of the college’s students are enrolled. Some community members and Goddard staff and faculty say they’re concerned the college will be sold or merged with a larger institution.

(Schulman) “But what is certain – and I’m absolutely sure of this from conversations with not only the trustees but faculty, staff, students – is that Goddard has an important role to play in higher education in the future, as it has in the past. Which means, as far as I’m concerned, that the decision to not merge Goddard with another institution and therefor submerge it’s identity with another institution is a pretty solid decision.”

(Zind) The 56-year old Schulman will assume the Goddard presidency in January.

For Vermont Public Radio, I’m Steve Zind.
