Governor signs drug re-importation into law

Governor Jim Douglas has signed into law a bill that’s designed to help Vermonters buy lower-priced prescription drugs from Canada and Europe.

The governor says he doesn’t think the bill will help that many people, but he signed it because it might reduce prices for some Vermonters. Douglas says he thinks the Legislature should be spending more time working on health insurance reform, saving the Medicaid health insurance program and other issues.

The new law directs Vermont to join Illinois and three other states in a coalition through which residents can import their prescriptions. The initiative can be accessed through a Web site, www.IsaveRX.net.
