Governors Worry About FairPoint Debt Restructuring

The governors of Vermont, Maine and New Hampshire say they want assurances from FairPoint Communications that any debt restructuring by the company doesn’t further erode customer service.

In a letter Tuesday to FairPoint CEO David Hauser, they said customers have withstood serious service quality problems while the company converted from Verizon systems to its own.

FairPoint, which bought Verizon’s operations in the three states but has been plagued with problems, hopes to restructure its debts to stave off a bankruptcy filing.

Maine Gov. John Baldacci, New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch and Vermont Gov. Jim Douglas say a top priority in any restructuring must include the goal of improving customer service, making infrastructure improvements and expanding broadband service.
