Group Advocates Against Judicial Retention

A group has formed to lobby against the reappointment of Vermont Supreme Court Justices. Citizens Alliance for Judicial Accountability says it wants legislative candidates to discuss whether they think justices should be retained.

Retiring state representative Virginia Duffy, a Republican from Rutland, is heading the group. She says the Supreme Court has twice in the past seven years usurped the Legislature’s power by directing it to pass certain laws.

Duffy says that led to the Act 60 education funding law and the civil unions law for gay and lesbian couples. She says those decisions stretch the plain language of the Constitution and that justices who supported the decisions should not retained.
