Group breeds blight-resistant tree

A national group based in Bennington is trying to save the American chestnut tree.

The American Chestnut Foundation has been breeding trees for 20 years and hopes it has come up with one that is disease resistant.

A fungus from Asia wiped out the American chestnut from the Appalachian forest in the early 1900s. A few lone trees still exist in Vermont.

At its annual meeting in Burlington on Friday, the foundation will share updates about its breeding program with 200 researchers and volunteers and visit a chestnut plantation in Shelburne.
