Group charges Sheffield wind agreement is illegal

A group fighting a commercial wind power project planned for Sheffield and Sutton is charging that the town of Sheffield’s agreement with the developer is illegal.

The town recently announced it had agreed with the UPC wind development firm that the company would pay between $400,000 and $550,000 in local property taxes during the 20-year life of the project.

But a group called the Ridge Protectors says that amounts to a tax stabilization agreement, and that such an agreement needs to be put before voters.

Town officials and the developer’s lawyer say they do not believe the deal amounted to a tax stabilization agreement.
