Scores of surplus Vermont bicycles are headed to the third world as a part of an economic development project.

Volunteers for Pedals for Progress accepted the bicycles Saturday at the group’s 10th annual Chittenden County collection.

The national program was started by returned Peace Corps volunteers. Within the first hour of yesterday’s collection in Burlington, 68 bikes had been donated.

Returned Kenya Peace Corps Volunteer Bob Thompson says in the developing world bicycles can are a vital form of transportation.

After being accepted, the bicycles were packed in a 53-foot shipping container. They will be trucked to a port in New Jersey without charge.
