Group hopes to reopen debate on Champion Lands

A group that is critical of an agreement governing the former Champion Lands in the Northeast Kingdom hopes the incoming Governor Douglas, will help them change the terms.

The group, the Vermont Traditions Coalition, is opposed to the state’s plan for the 133,000 – especially a 12,000-acre tract that’s protected from logging. The land is still open to hunting, fishing and trapping.

But the Coalition says that by restricting logging, the state is harming the wildlife habitat – and will ruin the experience for hunters. The coalition is calling for Governor-elect Douglas to rescind an executive order that Governor Howard Dean signed in November.
