Group Sees ‘Sputtering’ Jobs Picture

A Vermont group that analyzes labor figures says the state’s job market isn’t improving as fast as it may appear to be at first glance.

The comments by the Public Assets Institute were released after the state Department of Labor announced Friday that the Vermont unemployment rate had dropped to 4.6 percent in April, down two-tenths of 1 percent from March.

The group says another way to look at the matter is by the number of jobs available, and it says that number is shrinking.

The Public Assets Institute says while the official unemployment rate appears to be improving, the number of jobs in Vermont dropped by more 1,100 between March and April.
