Two environmental organizations want the state of Vermont to increase the money it spends on energy efficiency programs by $20 million.

But the state Department of Public Service is recommending that the program’s budget increase by the rate of inflation.

The utility Efficiency Vermont works to reduce Vermonters’ use of electricity. It’s funded through a fee on electric bills.

The Conservation Law Foundation and Vermont Public Interest Research Group want the Public Service Board to increase spending on the program from $30 million to $52 million next year.

The department argues the increased use of compact fluorescent bulbs and changes in federal regulations have taken care of many of the efficiencies the utility targets.
