The Vermont National Guard, like its counterparts around the country, is trying to step up recruiting by getting already enlisted Guard members to help bring in new soldiers.

On Saturday, a Guard member from Grafton will get a $2,000 check as a bonus for his work helping to recruit a soldier. Sergeant Ladd Wilbur of Grafton is getting the award at an event at the Rutland Armory Saturday morning.

The Guard says its new recruiting assistance program is a cost-effective way to get new soldiers to sign up.
