Hartland couple wants town help to drill new well

A Hartland couple is asking the town to drill them a new well using some of the money it got in a legal settlement after a fuel spill more than a decade ago.

Hartland was one of 152 public water providers to share in $422 million after an Irving Oil tanker truck rolled over near Hartland-Quechee Road and Merritt Road in 1997. The town got $460,000 to treat wells contaminated by MTBE, a possible carcinogen once used to boost octane levels in gasoline.

Pete and Tricia Cornelius, whose water supply is the last of 41 in Hartland that continues to show high levels of MTBE, want the town to help them. A meeting is set for Monday on their request and other potential uses of the money.
