The Vermont Health Department is offering some advice on swimming etiquette, aimed at making the summer pasttime a healthier experience.

The department says parents should have their children take frequent bathroom breaks to make sure young bathers aren’t fouling the water.

The aim is to cut down on waterborne illnesses that can cause a variety of symptoms including gastrointestinal, skin, ear, respiratory, eye and wound infections.

The department also recommends showering before swimming when possible and washing hands after using the bathroom.

Swimming areas around Vermont have been forced to close in recent years due to contamination.
