The state Health Department is urging Vermonters to get their flu shots and take simple steps to avoid getting sick this winter.

Health Commissioner Sharon Moffatt says the best way to protect oneself against the flu is to get vaccinated.

Other ways to keep the disease from spreading are to cover your mouth and nose whenever you cough or sneeze, wash your hands often and stay home from school or work if you’re sick.

More than 60 percent of flu vaccine for children and 90,000 doses of adult vaccine have been distributed to health care providers.

Some health care providers are starting to hold adult flu-shot clinics around the state.
