(Host) Health officials are warning there’s a high level of toxins on the eastern shores of Missisiquoi Bay at the northern end of Lake Champlain.
The toxins come from the bloom of blue-green algae on the big bay.
The Vermont Health Department says boaters, swimmers and residents should avoid contact with the water, including intakes for water supply to private homes.
Pets also should be kept out of the water.
The contaminated water can cause skin irritations or allergic reactions. Drinking it can lead to nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
The Health Department has a map on its web site of where toxic blue-green algae has been spotted.
