High Winds Causing Power Outages

Many Vermonters are without power today, as high winds have knocked down trees and power lines.

At mid day utilities were reporting nearly 18,000 customers without power.

The outages largely run along the western slopes of the Green Mountains.

Utility crews are out in force, according to Green Mountain Power spokesman Jeremy Baker, "Right now what we’re looking at, we’ve got a lot of people out there assessing, and the wind has continued to blow as forecasted and all of our crews are out there working."

Baker says GMP anticipates doing much of the restoration work in the daylight hours and they’re reaching out to contract line crews to get additional help. The southern counties of Vermont have been the hardest hit, and with high wind warnings through this evening, repeat outages are possible.

Many people in Jericho were also without power. Baker says that was due to a transmission outage.

"We had a tree come down on a transmission line between Fairfax and Underhill that took out our Underhill substation," Baker said.

Power should be restored soon for the 2,500 customers affected by that outage. Vermont Electric Cooperative and Washington Electric Cooperative are also reporting customers without power.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind warning until 7 p.m. for the western slopes and higher terrain of the Green Mountains. Earlier this morning, winds on Mount Mansfield were gusting up to 125 miles per hour.

Forecasts are calling for winds of 35 to 45 mph with gusts up to 65 mph.
