A cheese factory in Hinesburg was heavily damaged by fire last night.

The Burlington Free Press reports that flames as high as 100 feet could be seen for miles in the blaze at the Saputo USA factory. Several residents were evacuated from a nearby street to a high school. Hinesburg Fire chief Chris Morrell says at least one firefighter received minor injuries in the blaze. State hazardous materials teams were on site to determine what chemicals might have been stored in the building.

The fire was brought under control before 11 o’clock last night and Vermont Route 116 is open this morning, after a temporary shutdown last night.

No word yet on what caused the fire.
