The Saputo USA cheese plant in Hinesburg that was damaged by fire last month will not reopen, leaving about 80 people without jobs.

The Quebec-based owner of the plant decided to close the plant rather than repair it and move production to other Saputo facilities.

The Sept. 29 fire heavily damaged a warehouse.

The plant made mozzarella and other specialty and shredded cheeses. State officials say it had been receiving about a million pounds of milk a day from 88 dairy farmers in western Vermont and New York through a contract with Agri-Mark Cabot Inc.

Saputo officials say some of the workers will be offered jobs at other sites.
