Congress has approved a proposal that would prohibit the Department of Homeland Security from privatizing certain jobs. Senator Patrick Leahy says that would help to protect 100 jobs in St. Albans.
The legislation would prohibit the department from contracting to private companies for the jobs of immigration information officer, contact representative, or investigative assistant. Immigration information officers are responsible for screening applications for immigration benefits to detect fraud. They also perform criminal background checks on applicants.
