Hose Failure Causes Gasoline Leak Near Downtown Barre

Environmental officials and emergency responders say a failure in hose at a Barre gas station led to the leak of as much as 3,000 gallons of gasoline into the ground.

The leak has been fixed, but officials said Wednesday they were trying to determine the size of the leak at North End Deli on Barre’s North Main Street and how to clean it from the soil.

The fire marshal says the gasoline has migrated into the sewer system and many people are detecting gasoline fumes in their homes.

The city is removing manhole covers to vent the sewer system and officials are continuing to monitor the situation.

Officials say the gasoline levels never reached explosive levels nor levels that would harm human health.
