House committee may expand online criminal registry

A Vermont House committee is considering whether to make court records of state convictions available online. House Judiciary Committee Chairwoman Peg Flory says the committee may add the provision to a Senate-passed bill that calls for pictures of some sex offenders to be posted on the Internet.

Flory says an expanded online registry of criminal convictions would allow employers around the state to do background checks on people they consider hiring. But Senate Judiciary Chairman Dick Sears says he’s concerned about adding a major new concept to the bill his committee drafted.
