The Human Services Committee of the Vermont House has an agenda full of hotly debated plans put forward by Gov. Peter Shumlin as lawmakers return from their Town Meeting break.
The committee this coming week will be looking at the governor’s proposal to limit the time families can be on Vermont’s welfare-to-work Reach Up program in light of a new study indicating a similar change in Maine hurt many low-income families there.
The committee will also look at a plan to reduce the earned income tax credit for low-income working families.
Shumlin wants to use money saved through that reduction to expand child care subsidies. But many lawmakers appear skeptical of cutting one benefit to boost another.
