A proposed restructuring of Vermont’s largest agency has passed an important test. A legislative committee approved a plan today to overhaul the Agency of Human Services. The plan now goes to the Joint Fiscal Committee and lawmakers say it’s likely to win approval there as well.

The agency reorganization plan was presented to lawmakers in February. It calls for cutting the number of departments from eight to five, and making services more efficient. The reorganization is aimed at making it easier for clients to find and obtain services. Eileen Elliott, the deputy secretary of the agency, says if the proposal is approved by the Joint Fiscal Committee, the agency will start putting changes in place on July 1.

The committee has two weeks to handle the matter.
