In revote, Barre adopts sex offender ordinance

In a revote Tuesday, the Barre City Council again enacted strict residency requirements for sex offenders in the community.

The ordinance prohibits convicted sex offenders from establishing a residence within one-thousand feet of any public or private school or municipally maintained park or playground.

Last week the council adopted the ordinance but discovered it was enacted without being published before the hearing in the local newspaper.

So officials placed an ad and then called another hearing and vote for Tuesday evening.

At the hearing, which was largely in support of the ordinance, some residents raised concerns that it would not affect many perpetrators who know their victims and might give parents a false sense of security.
