Individual federal aid unlikely for NH residents hurt by ice storm

Today is the deadline for New Hampshire officials to collect estimates of damage to individual homes and businesses from last month’s ice storm, but federal aid is unlikely.

President Bush has approved a major disaster declaration that will allow the state and communities to recoup up to 75 percent of their costs due to the storm. But the state would need about 100 homes with significant damage to qualify for individual aid, which state officials say is unlikely.

As for businesses, the head of the New Hampshire Lodging and Restaurant Association says she hasn’t heard from any members who were affected in a catastrophic way.
