There are few people who know more about how the tax system in America really functions than David Cay Johnston.

The former economic reporter for the New York Times won a Pulitzer Prize in 2001 for his running investigation of the tax system, and his new book is called "Free Lunch: How the Wealthiest Americans Enrich Themselves at Government Expense (and Stick You With the Bill)."

Johnston will bring that cheery message to Montpelier this evening and to Burlington tomorrow.

Johnston pulls no punches when he talks about the current call for a bailout of financial institutions. He says in many ways, it’s just business as usual.

Johnston will be giving a reading from his latest book, Free Lunch, at the Montpelier City Hall Auditorium at 7 p.m., Oct. 1. It is free and open to the public, but people are asked to register in advance.

On Thursday, Johnston will be in Montpelier at the third annual Choices for Vermont conference, which will take place at Capitol Plaza from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

At 7 p.m. on Thursday, Johnston will be speaking in John Dewey Lounge, Old Mill on the UVM campus, in an event sponsored by UVM’s student newspaper, The Vermont Cynic.
