Gary Cole could hardly believe his luck. In 2003, the self-proclaimed arts and culture lover who also happens to be a staunch Republican, was offered a high-ranking job in the Bush administration awarding grants to arts organizations all around the country. But before Cole could advance his artistic vision as a Presidential appointee to the National Endowment of the Arts, the offer was mysteriously retracted.

Finding out why and dealing with the sense of betrayal he felt is the subject of Gary Cole’s new book, Artless – The Odyssey of a Republican Cultural Creative. He recently spoke with Mitch Wertlieb about his book.
